The Asheville City Schools district is comprised of Asheville High School, Asheville Middle School, and Isaac Dickson, Vance, Claxton, Hall Fletcher, and Ira B. Jones Elementary Schools. In addition, there are several alternative schools within the system. Asheville City Preschool is an Early Head Start center; there is the Asheville Preparatory Academy, the Randolph Learning Center, and SILSA, the School of Inquiry and Life Sciences at Asheville.
The Buncombe County School System operates several other public schools around the Asheville Area, including six other high schools and numerous middle and elementary schools.
Aside from the public schools, there are many Asheville private schools. The two private residential high schools are the Christ School, in Arden, which is all male, and the secular Asheville School. Both Schools also accept local day students.
The other local private schools, all of which enroll day students, include Asheville Christian Academy, Carolina Day School, Emmanuel Lutheran School, Hanger Hall School for Girls, and The New Classical Academy. In addition, New City Christian School is a private school for low-income students.
There are also three charter schools in Asheville: Art Space Charter School, Evergreen Community Charter School, and the Francis Delany New School for Children. These schools are part of the public school system and are grades K-8.
The Asheville city school system also incorporates five magnet schools that are grades K-5.
